About the Exam
Any person or company involved in the construction, reconstruction, alteration, maintenance, and/or repair of any roof in Illinois is required to be licensed in order to operate legally in the State of Illinois. To obtain this license, a “qualifying party” must pass a state-sponsored examination.
Continental Testing is a private company hired by the State of Illinois to develop and present the Illinois Roofing Exams. Continental presents these exams, at a cost of $226, on six dates per year, and at two locations – Chicago and Springfield. Those wishing to take the exam must register with Continental Testing directly, approximately a month before the actual exam date.
The Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act specifies two classifications of roofing contractor: Residential (“limited” license) and Residential, Commercial and Industrial (“unlimited” license). However, there are actually THREE different license examinations:
● Residential – to qualify for a Limited License
● Residential, Commercial, and Industrial – to qualify for an Unlimited License
● Commercial/Industrial (those holding a Limited license for at least one year can qualify for converting their Limited license to an Unlimited License by passing this exam)
